He was always creeping around the edge of the things. He sometimes thought that he assumed formlessness because he would be at the edge of a conversation and no one would notice his silence. He would be at the edge of a crowd and no one would notice his presence. He would be at the edge of a realization, and it would never come. Yet, somehow through being at the edge of all these things he believed that he was able to synergize the world in a way that no one else, or perhaps very few, had done before. He felt at once a stranger and yet a citizen of every group and nation.

Vilarejo
- Marisa Monte

from the album Infinito Particular (2006)

A hauntingly relaxing melody carries this utopian vision of paradise on Earth, without war, famine, or poverty, where there's room for everyone, and love awaits you....
Há um vilarejo ali There's a village over there
Onde areja um vento bom
Where a good wind blows
Na varanda, quem descansa
On the porch, the one who rests
Vê o horizonte deitar no chão
Sees the horizon lay down on the ground
Pra acalmar o coração
To calm the heart
Lá o mundo tem razão
There, the world makes sense
Terra de heróis, lares de mãe
Land of heroes, land of mom
Paraiso se mudou para lá
Paradise has moved there
Welcome to Jamrock - Damian "Junior Gong" Marley
from the album Welcome to Jamrock (2005)

So as to remind us that the world is not like Vilarejo, the son of Bob Marley welcomes us to Jamaica, where thugs, drugs, violence, and tourists mix. Slow urban reggae hypnotizes....

Welcome to Jamrock Camp whe' te thugs dem camp at Two pound a weed inna van back It inna yuh handbag yuh nap sack It inna yuh back pack The smell a give ya girlfriend contact Some bwoy nuh know dis Dem only come around like tourist On the beach with a few club soda

Ai Ai Ai - Vanessa Da Mata
from the album Essa Boneca Tem Manual (2006)

This song picks up the pace a bit (there's a dance mix at the end of the CD) and served as the theme song for the popular Brazilian telenovela "Bellissima." A c
atchy pop song about a woman's promise of love and ecstasy....
Se você quiser eu vou te dar um amor If you want I'll give you a love Desses de cinema like in the movies Não vai te faltar carinho, you'll never lack affection Sonho ou ass unto ao longo do dia I dream of this all day Se você quiser eu largo tudo If you want, I'll leave everything E vou pro mundo com você meu bem And go through the world with you my dear Nessa nossa estrada In this, our path Só terá belas praias e cacho eiras There are only beautiful beaches and waterfalls

Seven Days in Sunny June - Jamiroquai
from the albums Dynamite (2005) and High Times: Singles 1992-2006

A mellow yet still infectious and danceable diddy by the British disco king about a longtime female friend who doesn't want to take it to the n
ext level....

Seven days in sunny june But long enough to bloom The flowers on the summer dress you wore in spring The way we laughed as one And then you dropped the bomb That I know you too long for us to have a thing

Que Bola? - Orishas
from the album Emigrante
(2002)

Cuban hip-hop and son love song, literally "what's up?", a calm lament about a love gone awry and the emotions it arouses....

Pá Todo el cuerpo en hacer, Dios
¿Qué bolá?
Pá todo mito mi cuerpo
¿Qué bola?
Con corazones tiernos
¿Qué bolá?
Los que quedaron sin aliento
¿Qué bola?
Pá Todo el cuerpo en hacer, Dios
¿Qué bolá?
Pá todo mito mi cuerpo
¿Qué bola?
Cosas que abren los pechos
¿Qué bolá?
Dos veces guatin a tiempo
¿Qué bola?

HONORABLE MENTION:

Suffragette City - Seu Jorge
from the album THE LIFE AQUATIC STUDIO SESSIONS (2005)

Interesting remake of David Bowie's classic, with portuguese lyrics and slang that are largely original. This is a mellow tune of voice and guitar that settles the evening like a nice digestivo. Seu Jorge had a minor role in the film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)....

Ei man, você que fechou a porta
Ei man, e não deu beijo na boca
Ei man, atura a minha canhota
Se liga no passo que ela vem e te entorta
Ei man, não adianta ficar me olhando
Ei man, não há mais quem se importa
Ei man, segura a onda malandro
Você que se engana pensando estar me enganando

THAT IS THAT FELLOW ECLECTICOS... TELL ME WHAT YA THINK!
